M&S's waste scheme a hit with experts

Marks & Spencer has been voted the 'greenest' FTSE 100 company following the success of its Plan A to reduce waste, in a survey by PR firm Chatsworth.

More than 40% of respondents said M&S had run the best publicised green campaign in the past six months, although 10% said they believed the firm was guilty of a "greenwash".

M&S chief executive Stuart Rose was praised for "taking the lead" on green issues and orchestrating a "masterful" PR campaign around its Plan A scheme, which aims to tackle climate change, waste and sustainable raw materials.

However, respondents were split down the middle on whether extensive media coverage had contributed to "green fatigue" among the general public.

A M&S spokesperson said almost 70% of the company's packaging could be recycled by the majority of local authorities.

"A further 20% could also be recycled if there was a more consistent approach to recycling across the UK," added the spokesperson.

Tesco and Unilever were no longer considered to be "green winners".

One participant said Tesco had made lots of "minor, relatively effortless changes that they have bragged about long and loud".

Chatsworth polled 1,500 opinion formers in the UK, including national and trade journalists, sustainability experts and political groups.
