Nampak considers closing Somerset factory

Packaging manufacturer Nampak is considering closing its Crewkerne, Somerset factory and cutting administrative roles at its Gillingham office, a move that could result in the loss of 125 jobs.

The company said that the proposed job losses would not result in a reduction in capacity, but would streamline Nampak's operations and reduce its costs.

In a statement it said: "At this stage this proposal has not been finalised in any way and no definite decision will be made until consultation with all affected employees and their representatives has been completed."

The consultation will continue over the next three months.

The company has also announced an investment programme that will enable it to maintain its competitive edge and become the lowest cost packaging producer in the UK.

It will invest an undisclosed amount of money into technological improvements at its UK and continental plants.
