Research by the Reusable Packaging Association in American looking at how RFID tags withstand multiple trips through the supply chain is providing encouraging results, according to reports.

The researchers are putting the multi-use tags through the whole supply chain, starting with the grower through to the supermarkets.

After retail use, the RFIDs on the containers undergo extensive washing and are then sent to pooling/distribution centres before being returned to the shippers.

The tags have to survive temperature extremes from 100-plus degree heat, freezing or hydrocooling temperatures.

The researchers said the tags' read rate is impressive and they have high hopes that the tags will survive the field study intact.

Scientists and professors at Michigan State University, East Lansing, and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, along with other consultants are verifying the data in the study.

The study and complete data is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
