NatureFlex chosen for gingerbread packs

Packsys, an Australia-based packaging converter, is using Innovia Film's compostable NatureFlex film for the packaging of Gingerbread Folk.

NatureFlex is made from wood pulp and biodegrades in a home compost bin in a few weeks. It is also grease resistant and suitable for heat sealing as well as providing a good barrier to gases.

Gingerbread Folk co-founder Karen Sharman said: "The key factor for us was home-compostability because we wanted to show the Australian public it was okay to put these bags in their own home compost bins."

NatureFlex films are certified compostable to European and US standards, and the wood pulp comes from managed plantations that operate to Forestry Stewardship Commission (FSC) or equivalent standards.

Clive Jacob of converter Packsys said: "NatureFlex is suited extremely well to automated production like flow wrapping or bag making. The material requires very little machine adjustment can run with conventional materials through the same machine."

Innovia said the gingerbread were the first packaging in Australia to carry the seedling logo that certifies them as compostable.
