Promens pay dispute continues
Unite remains determined to secure a pay increase for members at Promens Packaging following five days of strikes in the past three weeks.
Steve Hart, Unite regional secretary, said the union wanted to meet with the firm to "discuss how to solve this dispute", but that members were "not prepared to accept such a low rate of pay".
"The resolve of our members is great," he added.
Workers at Promens Packaging in Beccles, Suffolk, decided on industrial action due to a pay rise offer of 2.2%, which the firm said was "viable in the current economic climate". Promens puts the rate of inflation at 3%.
The current rate of inflation according to the government's Retail Prices Index is 4.6%.
Hart said: "I'm sure the company has capacity to solve this issue, and also sure that some of its customers would be concerned to hear it's paying staff the absolute minimum wage."
Unite is hoping to secure a meeting with Promens soon and Hart would not rule out further strike action.
Promens declined to comment although has previously said it was open to discuss options with the workers' representatives.
The Icelandic firm produces plastic packaging as well as goods for the automotive and electronics industry.
The Beccles site, formerly known as Fibrenyle, is one of three Promens facilities in the UK and employs 255 people. The other plants are in Deeside and Thetford in Norfolk.
