SCA issues pack design challenge

SCA Packaging has launched a competition to find an innovative pack concept for chocolate to help raise awareness of supply chain demands on packaging.

The global packaging and paper group has laid down the gauntlet to students, design schools and budding packaging designers to enter Design Challenge 2008 and come up with a design that works across the supply chain, from creation to consumption.

SCA Packaging marketing communications manager Katia Schotte said: "This is a great and fun way for SCA to get new ideas, but more importantly, we want to reach out to the designers of tomorrow and create awareness about the implications of designing a successful pack."

The work will be judged by a mix of industry professionals from the confectionery industry, as well as retailers, SCA's head of design and an independent Belgian designer.

"We are in the process of preparing biographies of each jury member, which will appear on our website shortly," said Schotte.

Designers who are already working in the packaging industry are ineligible.

The closing date for entries is 5 December 2008.

Five designs will be shortlisted and their creators will spend a day at the SCA Packaging Innovation Centre to fine-tune their concepts with SCA packaging designers.

The winner, to be announced in March 2009, will receive €3,000 (£2,500) and an internship at the Innovation Centre in Brussels. Shortlisted entrants will each receive €1,000.
