Novelis begins European production of 'new aluminium'

Novelis, the aluminium rolling and can recycling firm, has started European production of its Novelis Fusion technology, which it has dubbed "The New Aluminium."

Novelis said Fusion offers customers multi-alloy rolled aluminium with combinations of different core properties and surface characteristics that were not possible before.

The company this week opened the Novelis Fusion casthouse in Sierre, Switzerland.

It said the capacity of the facility had almost doubled during the 17-month construction period because of the high level of interest, successful trials and orders.

The facility's current annual capacity is 130,000 tonnes.

Novelis added that the market's response to Fusion has led it to roll out production globally, with facilities in North America and Asia, soon to be joined by one in South America.

Arnaud de Weert, president of Novelis Europe, said: "We are sending out a strong invitation to European designers and engineers to explore the potential of Novelis Fusion. This material opens the door to the future of design."
