GreenBottle trials go live at Co-op

Bag-in-a-carton maker GreenBottle has teamed up with the East of England Co-operative Society to trial the bottle in one of its busiest stores.

The East of England Co-operative Society's Framlingham store in Suffolk will stock milk from the nearby Marybelle dairy bottled in the GreenBottle as part of the trial.

GreenBottle, which is also being trialled at a number of Asda stores in East Anglia, was invented by Martin Myerscough and uses recycled office waste paper to create an outer casing for an inner plastic bag that holds the milk.

The inner plastic bag can be manufactured from either low density polypropylene or a corn-starch based alternative.

Independent studies have found that the carbon footprint of the GreenBottle is 48% lower that a plastic bottle.

Suffolk-based GreenBottle has had a relationship with the Marybelle dairy since 2006.

Chief executive of the East of England Co-operative Society Richard Samson said his customers and members "appreciate local innovation and sourcing, both of which the GreenBottle and its partnership with Marybelle can provide".

James Strachan, director of Suffolk Meadow, owners of the MaryBelle dairy added that the GreenBottle "is extremely popular with our customers, who welcome the opportunity to purchase milk in an environmentally friendly container".

The East of England Co-operative Society has more than 200 outlets in East Anglia.
