UPM Raflatac to restructure RFID business

Label manufacturer UPM Raflatac is to develop its global RFID business by restructuring its operations and establishing a new product development centre.

The Finnish company will transfer production of its RFID tags and inlays from its factory in Jyväskylä in Finland to Guangzhou, China, and Fletcher, North Carolina in the US.

UPM Raflatac will then convert its Jyväskylä facility into a development centre and testing facility for new products.

Employee numbers are expected to reduce by 25 across the RFID business as a result of the restructure, which is due for completion by the end of March 2010.

UPM Raflatac serves the media management, consumer and luxury goods, clothes, pharmaceutical and healthcare and industrial logistics sectors. It has sales operations in Europe, the US and Asia.

UPM senior vice president of RFID Christer Härkönen told Packaging News: "We want to be even more competitive and have a better offering in those countries we're already in."

The company opened a new EUR 90m label stock factory in Kobierzyce in south-west Poland this month to serve the European labelling industry.
