Pack designers must maintain a “re-use” mindset

Packaging designers must move from a disposable to a constant re-use mindset in an effort to reduce waste, according to a world-renowned chemist

Professor Michael Braungart said that packaging designers should plan for a “product’s potential recycling or re-use at the end of its life before it is even made”.

Speaking to PN last month, Braungart urged the packaging industry to “stop being a victim and take pride in the role it plays in saving people’s lives”.

He made this comment in a newly published handbook aimed at packaging designers and brand owners: The Power of Metal Packaging, published and produced by the Ardagh Group.

The firm said that the book contains “a series of thought provoking articles as well as summarising the latest developments in metal packaging as used in daily life”.

Roland ten Klooster, professor of Packaging Design and Management at the University of Twente, the Netherlands and chair of the jury of the Packaging Design Award “Een GenialeVerpakking”, reflects on the fact that in the European Union alone 25,000 items of packaging are opened every second, and said that packaging makes a positive contribution to modern society.

“This is not the first reference work on exceptional packaging and graphic designs, but it is we believe the only one to focus solely on metal packaging,” said Ardagh Group commercial director Woep Möller.

This is so important. For too long packaging was designed for the immediate use only and little regard to what happens to it after it has served its primary purpose. The classic example is the 6 pack plastic rings. These are still being used by some irresponsible manufacturers amazingly. Plus the lifting loops on the 2-3 liter juice bottles need to be changed to a T handle to eliminate the loop. The security rings on almost all soda bottles is a big polluter and a problem for wildlife. These come off the bottles and can be found in many places. Those too can be redesigned to eliminate the loop, thereby avoiding the current damage they are causing.
