EXCLUSIVE – Contract packer Central Pharma’s managing director has given a bullish outlook for UK manufacturing as he announced new expansion to double the size of his company’s premises.

The pharmaceutical contract packing specialist has taken on a 4,300sqm building adjacent to its existing site in Bedford after seeing an explosion in medical imports from India.

The expansion has come after a period in which Central Pharma has achieved huge growth in pharmaceutical imports from India and other markets as a result of gaining Importation Authorisation on their MHRA Manufacturer’s Licence (MIA).

Clark told Packaging News: “This expansion is the next logical step as we respond to the demand created by our strategy of raising our profile in Europe, India and the United States.

“Our proximity to Felixstowe has proved to be critical as we have seen explosive growth from Indian businesses utilising our importation and distribution expertise to complement our market leading packing performance.”

Initially, the building will house warehousing and distribution but an investment programme expected to total around £1m will add new packing lines to the site later this year.

He added that Central Pharma’s growth underlines the potential of UK manufacturing generally.

”Despite the prevailing doom and gloom, Central Pharma continues to prosper due to its focus on adding value without adding cost.

“I retain my confidence that we, in the UK, can compete in any manufacturing market with our flexible, innovative workforce and a reduction in the proliferation of senseless red tape arriving from Brussels.
