Futura bottle barrier gains PETcore approval

April 29, 2008 Comments Off

Futura Polyester’s BarPET/BeerPET packaging for soft drinks and beer bottles has been approved by trade association PET containers recycling Europe (PETcore) for use in bottle-to-bottle recycling applications

The Indian producer of speciality PET resins said it had developed BarPET/BeerPET, a PET/PTN (Poly Trimethylene Naphthalate) alloy containing 10% PTN, to enhance thermal stability and improve the gas, UV and water vapour properties of PET packaging. The firm said PTN was also suitable for food contact applications.

Bottles made from the material were tested in a bottle stream containing up to 25% of clear, monolayer barrier bottles.

Brussels-based PETcore concluded that Futura's technology for gas barrier enhancement would have "no negative impact" on the quality of recycled PET and could be used at levels of up to 10% in the bottle-to-bottle recycling process.
