Jill Park: Reasons to be cheerful

Well at last it’s happened. The UK is no longer in recession. In the last quarter of 2009 the economy grew by a mere 0.1%, even less than the paltry 0.4% that economists were predicting. After six quarters of decline we have finally emerging from the gloom of harsh economic times.

Hmm, probably not. Apparently the figure given by the Office of National Statistics is just an estimate and so it could be that we are still technically in a recession. And then there is the not unheard of double-dip recession, meaning this could be a temporary respite before the descent back into negative growth.

Tuned out yet? I think it’s time for some good news. Amongst all this uncertainty the packaging industry has rallied round and managed to raise a fantastic £750 for our Haiti appeal. This week a £250 donation from Smurfit Kappa pushed the collection up even further. We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for their contributions in these difficult economic times.

We’re still running the campaign and any donations will make a difference. To make your donation, click on this link http://www.justgiving.com/pnhaitiappeal

This month there also came the story of survival of a possum rescued from an industrial printing press in Sydney, Australia. According to the Manly Daily newspaper, a ringtail possum and her joey were discovered by staff at the Roller Poster Company.

“The mother was absolutely smothered in oil and it was also in her pouch, which had to be handwashed,” Wires rescuer Barry Alexander told the Manly Daily. “We have given her a bath, but she will need a few more over the next few days because it is too stressful for her at the moment.”

And then there’s the fact that Bubble Wrap has gone gold to mark its 50th anniversary. To celebrate Sealed Air’s factory in Saddle River, New Jersey, produced a special run of gold Bubble Wrap. As my colleagues here at PN Towers know, I am a big fan of Bubble Wrap so any samples would be very welcome.

So, yes the recession is officially over. The industry’s struggles may not be, but amongst the gloom there are definitely reasons to be cheerful.
