Johnson’s Baby has become the first baby wipe brand to sign up to Terracycle’s upcycling scheme that aims to transform used packaging into saleable products

Under the ‘Wipe out Waste’ programme, used baby wipe packs are collected from consumers and will be used to make products such as baby bibs or mouse mats.

The scheme covers the UK and also signals the first move into Ireland for Terracycle, which was first established in the US in 2001 and launched in the UK in late 2009.

A spokesperson for Terracycle for every piece of baby wipes  packaging sent in, 2p would be donated to a charity or school of the collector’s choice.

“Johnson’s Baby is the first baby wipes manufacturer to take the lead to upcycle its packaging and the Wipe out Waste scheme is the first TerraCycle initiative in Ireland,” the spokesperson said.

Johnson’s has set up a website, www.wipeoutwaste.co.uk, where consumers can sign up to collect the packs. They can also be collected through some supermarkets and nurseries.

Terracycle works with other brands in the UK such as Kenco, Ella’s Kitchen and Tassimo and has been set up to manufacture consumer goods from the packs it collects.

It is also currently trialling collections of asthma inhalers and is in an ambitious phase of growth.

It is well-established in the Americas and has recently launched in Ireland. A spokesman told Packaging News that the firm was expecting to be operating in 20 countries by the end of the year.

However, it has not yet begun manufacturing in the UK as it is currently building up stocks of material.
