Material matchmaker finds bathroom firm outlet for used polystyreneJill Park, 2 March 2009Be the first to comment on this article Spanish ceramics and bathroom manufacturer Porcelanosa has found an outlet for its used polystyrene through materials “dating service” the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP). Porcelanosa was looking for an alternative route of disposal for 6ft polystyrene slabs, used to deliver the company’s bath products, which were being sent to landfill. NISP was made aware of the problem on a routine visit to Porcelanosa in November. The organisation partnered Porcelanosa with UK computer recycling firm IT Green, which was looking for a source of recycled polystyrene. IT Green now collects the polystyrene slabs from Porcelanosa on a monthly basis, which saves both companies £1,800 per month. IT Green had been buying new polystyrene to protect its refurbished computer products, but had advised NISP that it wanted to use recycled material. NISP is funded by Defra, the Scottish Government, The Welsh Assembly Government, Invest Northern Ireland and selected regional development agencies.
