Menace or myth: excess packaging

Every month we ask an expert if there is any merit in the latest scare stories about packaging…

This month
A new environmental website, Green Sword, is campaigning against the excess packaging of toys. The organisation estimated that 800,000 tonnes of toy packaging waste would be sent to landfill over Christmas.

Myth
“The toy industry is one of the worst offenders for excessive packaging,” argues Tony Blakey, spokesman for Green Sword.

“Toys like a Rubiks Revo take up only 13% of their box. Even worse, most packaging is hard-to-recycle plastic and laminated cardboard.” However, Woolworths toy spokesman Daniel Himsworth contests this view. He says: “Many [toys] have several components that need to be kept together with packaging. The packaging also acts as protection while the toys are in transit”.
