New Chesapeake design venture launches CartonBag

December 4, 2009 Comments Off

Chesapeake’s newly independent design business Chesapeake Creative is to take on the plastic bag in cartonboard box market with its CartonBag format

CartonBag consists of a pre-made bag in a covered carton that is being targeted at loose products such as wrapped confectionery, dried fruit and personal care items.

Chesapeake developed the manufacturing process, which includes multi-directional gluing of the plastic bag to the carton, over a number of months.

Originally the carton was developed as a patched bag, but over time it has evolved into a bag in a carton skeleton.

The bag can be made from glacine paper, brown paper, films or even cloth to cater for different audiences.

Divisional design and development director of Chesapeake Branded Packaging Janet Shipton said that the material could be opaque or coloured.

The launch of the CartonBag follows the creation of Chesapeake Creative, a design service that will operate separately from Chesapeake’s site-based design.

Creative will continue to work with Chesapeake’s R&D division to develop new finishes and structures and draw on its site’s manufacturing knowledge.

Shipton said: “Our understanding of the manufacturing process helps set us aside from many traditional agencies ensuring we create inspirational packaging designs every time.”
