Fashionistas could soon be sporting handbags made from drink can ring-pulls, thanks to a charitable project being supported by Rexam. The can manufacturer has donated 100,000 aluminium cans to the Philippines Community Fund, which will help disadvantaged Filipinos to earn money by using the can tabs to make handbags, which will be sold to UK consumers. You might call it a can-do attitude.

Fear not. Attendees at this year’s UK Packaging Awards were not hallucinating when they saw a confused and lost-looking woman – very possibly muttering bankers under her breath – stumbling into the champagne reception. It was, in fact, financial journalist Gill Wadsworth, who was meant to be attending the Investment Management Awards, but had walked into the wrong do. According to a piece in Investment Adviser, the hackette was in search of the M&G pre-dinner drinks, not on the run from braying bankers boasting of their part in the financial crisis.
Pet recycling
Some consumers still find putting empty packaging into the correct recycling box confusing but Sonny, a nine-year-old springer spaniel from Scunthorpe, has no such problems. According to the Daily Telegraph, the eco-friendly mutt’s ability to place rubbish in the correct recycling bin has earned him an environmental award from his local authority for his contribution to helping keep the neighbourhood clean.
