New product launches in the Middle East and Africa had a bumper year in 2009. According to Mintel’s Global New Products Database, 9,432 new products launched last year, compared to 7,603 in 2006 – the previous largest number – and a 30% improvement on 2008.
Non-alcoholic beverages remains the category with the most new product launches, but, with the exception of the colour cosmetics category that fell relative to 2008, all areas grew last year. Sauces and seasonings showed the largest growth in 2009, while bakery and dairy remained strong.
In terms of packaging formats, flexibles are still the dominant player in the region, followed by bottles and cartons. Jars showed impressive growth – 40% more new products were packaged in the format in 2009 than the previous year.
