Stuntman Gary Connery made the leap yesterday from a helicopter flying 730m above Oxfordshire.
The 42-year-old wore a “wingsuit” for the jump and was fitted with a parachute, although he did not use it.
He is reported to have hit speeds of 80mph during the flight, before landing at a speed of around 50mph in the specially-constructed pile of 18,600 boxes.
The landing strip of boxes, known as a box rig, was around 100m long by 15m wide. It is unclear who supplied the boxes for the record attempt.
After emerging unscathed from the middle of the pile of boxes, Connery told reporters: “I feel incredible, just completely elated.
“I have been training and planning for this record attempt for many years now and I am so proud to have achieved a world first.
“I want to thank everyone involved for their support and belief in me because this really has been a team effort.
“Tonight will be all about celebrating with friends and family. Tomorrow I will be plotting my next daring challenge.
Connery has worked on films including Die Another Day, Batman Begins and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
