Soap Box Blog: Put on your comfy shoes, it’s PPMA time

You need sensible shoes if you are going to be a business journalist. For men, I imagine this is not a major consideration. Traipsing the halls of the NEC in a pair of brogues is never going to cause much concern. But, for girls, it’s worth keeping in mind as yes, next week is PPMA.

Last year, the former minister for trade and investment, Lord Digby Jones opened proceedings with a rallying speech praising the commitment to training and R&D and the environmental awareness demonstrated by the firms, which he said was “vital to the future of British manufacturing”.

British industry has since taken a big knock from the recession. But from what we hear at Packaging News it is the companies that are investing that continue to do well. Take Welsh digital label printer Borble, for example. At the start of the year, the company installed a Xeikon 3300 label press using a grant under the Single Investment Fund scheme. The company has since thrived.

Perhaps this could be the perfect time to prepare for the upturn. For those companies with the cash to invest, or the help of a government grant, new equipment could be a way to ensure your business exits the downturn fit to compete. The PPMA show provides the perfect opportunity to view the latest machines across all sectors.

To help navigate the 300-plus stands, PPMA has even created ready-made trails. We at Packaging News will all be up at the show to gauge the market and to see the equipment in action. If you spot us with our hit-list in hand – wearing our comfy brogue shoes – be sure to come and say hello.

The Process and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA) show will be held between 29 September and 1 October, 2009 in the Birmingham NEC.
