‘World’s largest’ bottle-to-bottle plastic recycling plant opens

A facility that can recycle two billion plastic PET bottles per year has opened in the United States.

Plastics recycler CarbonLITE, which owns the plant,  claims that it is the world’s largest bottle-to-bottle plastic recycling plant.

Located in Riverside, California, the 220,000 sq-ft plant  is expected to prevent most plastic bottles from the state being exported to China.

With backing from customers PepsiCo and Nestle Waters, the facility will create a PET resin that has a letter of non-objection that will allow it to be used at levels up to 100% recycled content in the manufacture of PET bottles and containers.

CarbonLITE chairman Leon Farahnik said: “We’re committed to being the leading bottle-to-bottle recycler, preserving resources and reducing the carbon footprint from PET bottle production.

“Our customers are allowing us to truly make a large impact by creating a sustainable infrastructure for beverage companies.”
