Tributes have been paid to former Institute of Packaging chief executive John Webb-Jenkins, who died last week.

Webb-Jenkins was chief executive of the Institute of Packaging from 1999 to 2004 and was active both in the World Packaging Organisation and in the revival of EPIC, the European consortium of packaging institutes.

He died following a year-long battle with cancer.

Keith Barnes, the current chairman of the Packaging Society, said: “John was highly respected in our industry and will be greatly missed.

“For my own part John had provided lectures for my Michigan State University Summer school in the UK and his wisdom, humour and love of packaging were always evident.

“John was a character within the world of packaging and as such it will be a long time before another passes our way.”

Rodney Steel, chief executive of the British Contract Manufacturers and Packers Association (BCMPA), said: “John was very supportive of me when I first came on board at the BCMPA. There are many people in the packaging industry who will have fond memories of him.”
