Pharma sector to be focus of new ePedigree standard

Supply chain standards organisation EPCglobal has taken the first step towards being able to track and trace goods using RFID and Electronic Product Code technology.

The body has agreed specification for an Electronic Pedigree Document (ePedigree), which provides the source history of any individual item. It will initially focus on the pharmaceutical industry and will be used to combat counterfeiting across the supply chain.

David Lyon (pictured), business manager at EPCglobal, said: “It is taking a step towards recording what we need to know in the right format. The next step will be agreeing what is the best technology.”

He said work on developing the standard had been driven by the Food and Drug Administration in the US.

Meanwhile, RFID research organisation IDTechEx has predicted that both ultra-high-frequency and high-frequency tags will be used on packaging in the future, but did not go on to reveal what it thinks will be the standard technology for pharmaceuticals.

It said UHF was favoured in baggage, pallets and cases.
