Checkpoint snaps up RFID firm OATSystems

Checkpoint Systems, the supplier of product tracking and security systems, is to add to its RFID capabilities with the acquisition of US-based OATSystems for an undisclosed sum.

Massachusetts-based OATSystems specialises in software that turns RFID data into business information and has around 100 international clients in the retail, consumer electronics, manufacturing, life sciences and aerospace industries.

Checkpoint chief executive Rob van der Merwe said the two firms offered complementary product protection and inventory management systems, which would help retailers more easily track their products through the supply chain, reduce theft and improve on-shelf product availability for shoppers.

"The addition of OATSystems provides Checkpoint with multiple avenues for expansion into higher growth markets," he added. "The acquisition is consistent with our plans for growing revenue both organically and through acquisitions."

OATSystems will continue to be run by its senior management as a division of Checkpoint and operate independently with the aim of adding more clients in the industrial and consumer products sectors.
