Flexible packaging specialist Cliffe Packaging has bought the polypropylene flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) division of bulk packaging firm Structure-flex for an undisclosed amount

Cliffe Packaging Structure-flex buyStoke-on-Trent-based Cliffe produces a range of FIBC, stretch films and pallet covers  and said the acquisition of what is a non-core business for Structure-flex will help expand that portfolio.

The division will continue to operate from its Norfolk base to use up existing stock, but the plan is to consolidate the site in Stoke.

David Dawber is managing director of Cliffe Packaging but had previously worked in the FIBC division at Stucture-flex a decade ago.

He told Packaging News that expanding the business would provide a springboard for global expansion, particularly in the food industry.

“With the acquisition, the business becomes more orientated to the food industry. Cliffe already has a healthy business across a range of sectors, but this gives a major food focus,” he said.

He said that the deal, which was completed at the start of the month, had been well received by customers and suppliers alike.

Structure-flex director Ian Doughty is also chairman at Cliffe. He said the sale of a non-core division would enable it to focus on growth in the rest of the business.

“We will now be concentrating on the design and supply of reusable bulk containers for demanding applications and an increasingly diverse range of customer-led specialist products,” he said.

So this is just a company merger, the same directors were at both companies! Cliffe do not produce anything – they are a pure merchant through and through.
