Myth or Menace: plastic packaging

Plastics can pose big problems for recyclers. One BBC journalist took it upon herself to go without for the month of August, but is it possible to live without plastic?

Undecided
BBC journalist Chris Jeavans chose to live without buying plastic for the whole of August, logging her efforts online. Within days she was caught out when she bought a cup of coffee in what turned out to be a plastic-lined cup.

The issue of keeping her 18-month-old son in clean reusable nappies was another stumbling point and Jeavans on occasion resorted to biodegradable ones.

Response on packagingnews.co.uk turned the focus to end of life, with one contributor questioning whether it’s an issue of too much plastic or too little recycling. The jury is still out on this one.
