November’s issue of Packaging News carried promotional inserts showcasing print effects that companies can adopt to give their packs greater standout. Here, find out more about Colour Five’s UV-printed insert.

Brand owners are always looking for new ways to make products stand out from their competitors. One way to achieve this is through using UV printing onto foiled board.

The technique is widely used in high-end publishing applications such as book covers, special-edition magazine covers or annual reports. In packaging, it is also very popular, in particular for DVD and CD cases as well as cosmetics and even some food packaging.

In UV printing, high-intensity UV lamps in the press cure the inks and varnish onto the substrate. This allows the ink to be applied to a wide range of surfaces including PVC, vinyl and other plastics as well as foiled boards and other speciality boards.

The company behind this insert is London-based UV specialist Colour Five. The firm, which prints exclusively using the UV inks technique, produced the insert on a foiled board in the Mirri range, supplied by Celloglas, using Sun Chemical inks.

Neil Atkinson, joint managing director of Colour Five, says that the company is using an increasing range of foiled boards, often selected with the customer to suit a specific end use. One recent example was a DVD case that was printed onto holographic foiled board where the print had to register precisely with the holographic image on the board.

The technique is also adaptable to a range of applications, Atkinson says. “By manipulating the artwork and using a white base ink, the effect of the foiled board can be masked or boosted as needed.”
