Benson Group is targeting long-run work in the pharmaceutical sector after achieving Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) certification for its Newcastle food packaging plant.

Benson already produces pharmaceutical packaging at its Medica facility in Crewe and the Newcastle site has predominantly served the food sector.

Gaining the IQA’s Pharmaceutical Quality Group’s (PQG) PS9000:2001 certification for pharmaceutical packaging means Newcastle can take advantage of the lower cost base for longer-run work.

Benson Group managing director Mark Kerridge said: “With three B1-format presses on hand, Benson Group Newcastle has plenty of capability for long-run pharma production, and the plant is also very well equipped with regard to volume finishing applications.”

Kerridge added customers would also benefit from increase security of supply. “To be able to offer a ‘within-group’ disaster recovery plan also provides specific benefits to customers with regards to confidentiality,” he said.

PS9000:2001 replaces the two Pharmaceutical Supplier Codes of Practice for contact and printed packaging materials.
