Leading UK carton printers saw some recent technical innovations at a BPIF Carton Innovations workshop in Dresden this week.

Some 46 delegates attended the two-day event (12-13 June) held at KBA’s production facility in Radebeul. Carton printers saw demonstrations from companies including Sun Chemical, Bobst, Kodak, Watt Gilchrist, Robert Horne and Merck

Delegates from companies including Nampak, Benson Box and Boxes GH were impressed by KBA’s sidelay-free press technology and at least one intended to bring other representatives from their UK firms to the Radebeul plant with a view to a possible press purchase.

KBA demonstrated printing on polypropylene, fluted board and foamex on its Rapida 142 and Rapida 105 presses.

At the workshop of Ellerhold poster printers, delegates were shown a KBA Rapida 205 four-colour plus coating press used for poster printing. Ellerhold also has a fluted board production line and a Rapida 142 that the company uses for packaging. Ellerhold's Roland Gebauer described it as, "a step for the future".

Other delegates were impressed by the ink effects demonstrated by Sun Chemical, which used Merck opalescent pigments and tactile coatings to print on cartonboard.

Folding and gluing technology demonstrated by Bobst included its new Starfold and Visionfold machines, but the established Gyrobox technology, that pivots a blank from 0° to 90° and then folds more complex boxes in a single pass, proved popular with delegates keen to produce more innovative cartons.
