Gravy manufacturer buys Atwell labelling systemSimeon Goldstein, 16 December 2009Be the first to comment on this article Atwell Self-Adhesive Labellers has sold a multi-function wraparound system with a top-labelling head to food manufacturer Jardox Perfecta after being approached at the PPMA show. Jardox, which supplies specialist stocks, gravies, curry pastes, marinades, glazes and seasonings, sought out Atwell at September’s PPMA event with a view to replacing its existing labelling system. A week after the show, Jardox placed an order for the line. Atwell then visited the firm’s packaging site, picked up samples and supplied a system design and quote. The system was built, tested and delivered a week earlier than the quoted lead-time. Because of the wide range of products packaged by Jardox, Atwell’s brief was to devise a multi-function front-back wraparound system and top-labelling head, which would be suitably flexible and easy to use. David Mabb, Jardox’s site operations manager, said that the company was delighted with the labelling system, and added that it hadn’t “missed a beat since being installed”. The system incorporates a product separator to maximise efficiency on the line and a motorised chain aligner for oval-shaped jars and a top AL120-S label-head fitted with an Allen 53Lti thermal transfer printer to print batch and date codes and tamper-evident marking. Two more AL120-S label heads are fitted with motorised unwind motors for the application of front and back labels and the system also uses a pair of motorised wipe-down belts to ensure accurate label application. The line was designed to allow one of the side-mounted label heads to move to a second position, enabling round jars to have wraparound labels applied; while the addition of quick-change parts means that the same label head can be used to apply labels to a tapered pot.
