TV chef Jamie Oliver has dubbed labelling on packs a “disgrace” in a meeting with the House of Commons Health and Select Committee on health inequalities.

Oliver told MPs that there were “more important things to worry about in the world of food, nutrition and education than GDAs”.

In response to probing on the topic of traffic lights he said: “I know they are important, I know they are controversial, but personally I am confused about it.”

Oliver also spoke out against the fact that products can say that it is “sourced from the UK” on the front of the pack and then say “made in Denmark” on the back.

He said: “The supermarkets and manufacturers need to ‘volunteer’ this good practice, but frankly, I would rather have a standard that we adhere to.”

Last month Oliver met with the chair of the All-Party Group on Men’s Health Dr Howard Stoate MP to discuss the role of the food industry.
