Soap Box Blog: Nation-building with a cheese label

Cheese packaging rarely hits the headlines. But my eyes were opened to its possibilities on a recent driving tour around France, which included an unexpected (and very welcome) stop-off in Camembert in Normandy.

The tiny hamlet is the birthplace of the round cheese that has become synonymous with the whole of French cuisine. One of the small cluster of buildings was a fascinating museum dedicated to its history.

Did you know, for instance, that camembert was invented around the time of the French Revolution? Or that it moved from being a local product to becoming popular across France when it was fed to soldiers fighting in the trenches during the First World War?

Camembert’s packaging, too, is iconic in its own way. The circular, thin wooden boxes are synonymous with the cheese. And, in the two centuries since it was created, many of its labels have become small masterpieces of design in their own right, developing not only brands but often local and national identities.

Here are some of the best, courtesy of the excellent French blog Tout Un Frimage – feast your eyes.
