Family run contract manufacturer Expac operates in the personal care and cosmetics market.
The company has been in business for 35 years and operates from a 18,000sqm factory in Leyland, Lancashire.
Expac’s business is based around three core product formats; powder, liquid and alcohol.
With a struggling industry came loss of business – last May Expac lost two major clients worth a total of £1m to contract manufacturer’s based in the UAE.
Rather than carrying out cost cutting exercises Expac used this as motivation to actively find new business and improve the company as a whole to ensure that no further business would be lost.
Over the last 12 months the company has won just short of £1m of new business.
The company continues to excel, recording a 20% increase in turnover for April and 30% hike for May 2015.
One impressed judge said: “Remarkable recovery, maintained profitability, found new business, increased staff numbers. Commendable commitment to UK Packaging industry.”
Glowcroft crafts itself as a “one stop shop” to brand owners, offering a wide range of quality services including design, packaging innovation, quality contract packing services & distribution.
The Suffolk-based company only packs its customers products and brands and is therefore considered ‘competitor neutral’.
It has recorded its best financial performance, increasing turnover by 8% to £2.7m and significantly increasing the gross profit margin for the second year running, achieving a 14.7% increase in new active customers and providing improved long term financial stability.
Additionally, the company has invested £220,000 on equipment, including a second, six-head fully automatic liquid filling line, new coding equipment, an additional shrink wrapper and a CRM system.
The judging panel said: “Smashing company, very well managed, customer focused. Great performance.”
